Pushpops, obstacles and the purple YSL pumps.

Woooo
The past month has been quite the learning experience for me. =)
The "job" thing:
I got a temporary job with big responsibilities, where I had to FORCEFULLY change the way I dress. I knew I wouldn't be taken seriously in my orange fuzzy top(very last year Louis Vuitton I thought) even if it was worn with a black pencil skirt. It didn't help that I was youngest person there, either.

Thennnn due to a serious of unfortunate events, IT happened.....
My blog was tossed around La Ceiba like sibblings toss around an elder sister's diary. It has been turned into an object of ridicule...the whispers, the comments. I became the naca* with absurd dreams and hooker shoes. Then came the rumors of nude, obviously photoshopped pictures of me being passed around cellphones.
ohh FABI FABI!! I trusted and mingled with the wrong crowd, the kind that live for a reputation and are willing to step on others to get what they want.
(On a side note: Why why WHY is it that boys lie and cheat and then girls end up ganging up on EACH other?!! Oh that darn animal thing called survival instinct!!!)
I shouldn't have been surprised, though. La Ceiba is a small city and there isn't much to do.
Even so, I chickened out. I felt disappointed, and betrayed even. So I did the matching without the mixing, the classy without the fabulous, and yes, I EVEN changed many outfits because I didn't feel like being stared at or talked about.
Dumb!

I thought about this...
Possible reactions to my all-around-town diffamation and rejection? I could've either:
A.)Hide in embarassment, cry and feel sorry for myself.
B.)Lash out at those involved and fall into their little game of manipulation, OR
C.)Laugh, hope it's Halle Berry's body that was photoshopped with my face, and feel good that people think I'm someone worth talking about.
I went through option A for a while, but then realized how pathetic it was and decided for C, and stuck with it. Chin up, back into my senseless senses.

I was wondering how La Ceiba would react to other NACAS* (I say others because I've been referred to as one about 20 times in the past month) in the blogosphere who have also been constantly criticized and could care less. What about Queen Michelle from Kingdom of Style who was called "materialistic and pretentious" by an ignorant "Charlie" for making her own skirt+top á la Miu Miu?

Susie from Style Bubble who layers and unlayers wonderfully, to her heart's content and I am sure sees plenty of frowns and grins when going out...

And my wonderful friend Diana Bobar from SoFashon
who despite the ugly rumors spread by some classmates in Romania, she just recently launched an amazing Spring 08 RTW collection that has gotten tons of attention, fans and clients!

I'm sure it would be one heck of a show if all 4 of us, perhaps a girl or two from Facehunter and The Sartorialist, Chloe Sevigny and Lou Doillon came along, plus say Lala (Art Geek and Fashion Freak) and maybe Ashley Heaton (ChicShopper) walked the streets of La Ceiba altogether. What would happen if then Eleh (Come thrifting with me) and all the others would come and join us? Boy, that would be a full-on "naca" fest and boy, would we love it!
It's good stuff.
And I must add...
Thankyou bloggers for inspiring me, readers for the encouraging comments and thankyou boy from San Pedro Sula (yes!!!! a fellow Honduran who lives 2 hourse away from me!!!) for sending me the perfect email at the perfect time.

Anyway, I'm excited again...I started my second and last year of sewing school already!!! Yes yes!!! I've also been teaching Geral ("Gee") to sew, and she already made her first skirt.

I also finished a dress I was working on that I had ignored for a while due to the idle state of my "DIY" spirit. Heehee...it fits perfectly, and the straps look really good in the back, but I forgot to take any pictures of that! I used two different fabrics, and made the pattern myself which ended up being altered anyway.

My Etsy shop is still a plan, I need to get a lot of things done but pictures are already being taken!!! Preview coming up soon!! ;)

You know what's funny? That in the midst of all the criticism, I was hired last week as a "fashion advisor/consultant" for a holiday at a big department store, later helped them set up a fashion show where local media was present, was interviewed by a local tv channel and radio, and got two compliments on my shoes in only ONE night! Heeheehe...Even though I was really representing the store and not myself or my own style, it was alot ALOT of fun.
And ladies and gentlemen,

I decided I'm sticking to this verse:
"For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."
Luke 18:14

God is good, people. So let's enjoy when people are saying things, and keep doing our own shizzle without fighting back ;)

Queen Michelle said:
"Fashion blogs...are where we share our trials and tribulations as we navigate our way though the fashion landscape, expressing ourselves to others and baring our insecurities."

and I am so taking advantage of that... ;)

xoxo,
a very inspired Fabi in bubblegum pink hand-me-down pants...

*"Naca" (pronounced knock-uh) is a term constantly used in La Ceiba (or Honduras?)to describe a girl who mismatches, likes to shop at thrift stores, doesn't stick to local trends and likes to take risks. It's a twisted definition of the word "trashy".
It's supposed to be a bad term, but turns out I like it.

I'm glad you're back. It's a cliche, but a true one, that jealous people criticize. You will leave them all in the dust, and that's what they can't stand.

It's so cool you're finally back. And that you picked C at the end of the day :) I've missed your posts (:

I hate the word "Naca". Fortunately, it's not very used here in Peru, but I've heard it from mexicans, and yeah i have no idea where it comes from because it makes no sense at all.

Living in a small city has its disadvantages, but it sucks all of this happenned to you, you're so nice and cuuute.

Lovely pics as usual
Uh and I loved that little black dress you made!

arghhhh!!

I'm so happy your back too! We should all totally have a "naca" party and make it something cool and to be envious of! hehe..
I love your dress! You should teach me how to sew, i feel that I'm not sewing properly haha. And congrats on being hired for the department store! I wish something super like that happened to me. I've been applying to fashion internships like crazy and still have not heard back from any. Oh well, I'll just pretend that I'm too good for them :D

Welcome back! we've all missed you and your fabulous thoughts. i have trouble when i know people are saying things about me and what i wear, but at the end of the day, they're opinions really aren't that important to me. i admire you for being so brave in your decision to continue and dress the way you want. <3

Honey, you are amazing! Ignore what other say, you'll see you have a bright future in front of you and they will get to secretly respect you and look up to you in a while (yes, the same people that spread those rumors).
You know, Madonna lived by the fact that all (negative) publicity is good publicity, so just consider yourself the bad rockstar of Le Ceiba!
You go girl!
Thanks so much for mentioning me. I'm blushed and I'd gladly come visit! :)

I totally agree with Wendy. Have faith in your fabulous self and, if small minds can't get it, well, that's life...there are plenty of people in the world that do get it and will appreciate you for what you are!

Girl you are tough! Standing up to those people in La Ceiba is a big deal, but a very good deal! Why do people always react like a retard when someone is being different then they are?
I simply call it jealousy! They would love to look like you, but they don't have the guts for it!

And great great great that you are back :)! Missed the sewing school and the outfits, but love the black dress you made and the outfit you are wearing.

So cool that they asked you to set up an fashionshow 8)!

hey there!

it is crazy how our oh so open minded society behaves about people who really dare to be different and be a little more expressive.
this is what I love about the blogging world: everyone is so inspiring (and inspired) and it is all about showing who you are and what drives you.
I love the free spirit of it.

but leaving into the real world I think most people with a passion for excentricity are reacted to awkwardly sometimes.

Hey there. I have recently discovered... and LOVE your blog. To me, the way you dress and your philosophy on fashion, is EXACTLY what fashion is about. An extension of self and finding the fun in every day. I completely understand your dilemma regarding dressing for work as I had many of the same issues myself. So when I had to keep my wardrobe conservative, I made sure that my handbag, shoes, or accessories were much more interesting and subversive. Only those paying very close attention every realized what I was wearing!
On another note; I have added a link to your blog on mine http://superkawaiimama.blogspot.com/ and hope you approve.
Keep on being a fashion innovator; i am sure even Vivienne Westwood would be called a NOCA should she come down your street, and what a compliment that would be!

I can totally relate to you on this. I also happen to be a somewhat "different" dresser here in the Philippines. One item for instance is fur. I live in a tropical country, but because I love fur (fake ones, can't afford the real ones yet anyway) I still choose to wear thin fur vests, shrugs, or cropped fur jackets even in the midst of the heat. Another more recent instance includes me wearing a black dress, black leggings, and black shoes on a trip to the countryside and I got a lot of glares and stares from people in stopovers. But I just ignored them. It was difficult to just ignore people, gulp, and swallow my insecurity. But I got the hang of it and had the most fun as I got to be different and wear something that expresses me. Even in Manila (Philippines), a city, I still get stares from lots of strangers when I go out. What I realized was even though people shop at stores such as Zara, Mango, Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, etc. here in Manila, I still dress "different" to most Filipinos. But what the heck right? Thank God that there are people like you, Style Bubble's Susie, Style Bytes's Agathe, Hot Chocolate and Mint's Diana Rikasari, and Flickr's Boboniaa who exercise "fashion freedom" despite the hurtful comments and looks of other people. I believe fashion is meant to be enjoyeds, not ridiculed. Hoping for more posts (and fashion projects) from you Fabi! Good luck with your Etsy shop! Much Love, Mej.

As a blogger from the Bahamas (now in school in the US)I completely know what you are talking about. Fashion (including style risks) is not understood at all.I so often feel 'different' at home simply because I don't follow the accepted skimpy sequinned top, bootcut jeans, ugly pointy black heels formula. sometimes it makes me not want to go out or dress the way I want at all. I decided to F it this christmas and had the best time ever, so don't worry it will get better. You were one of my inspirations in starting my own blog and I'm so glad you are back!

I'm really sorry to hear that you had to go through something like this. I live in a third world country myself, and the attitudes that people have to anyone dressed even vaguely differently, are horrible (plus, most of their so-called 'fashion' is things I wouldn't touch even with a very long stick).
I know this post was made a long time ago, but I really admire the fact that you stood up for yourself against the meanness- Fabi is the perfect name for you indeed! I've seen cases of bloggers shutting down/moving their blogs because real-life people they knew found them and behaved horribly- I'm glad you didn't do the same.
From one third-world fashionista to another, I salute you :)

Fabi, you are fabulous. Don't let people get you down. Remember you are a girl with a mission and that scares people with insecurities. I love reading your blog and looking at your FAB-U-LOUS photos.

FYI:SIDE RANT ABOUT CHEATERS
I don't personally blame the other girl for what my C did and have not become friends with her either. Some boys and men are just selfish. Cheating is the MOST selfish act known to mankind in my book. When we look at it close, what does the bible say about idolatry and God being jealous (if the be all and end all who created the earth is jealous what chance do I have not to be?) My catrucho is one of them. He never puts me first...he is always looking out for #1. That hurts. I don't understand it, but then again I am American.....maybe it is just a cultural thing...or maybe he is just selfish? Oh well, back to work....

Girl, you are never alone in this world. Look at how many people that love you and your blog!

Hey, Fabi.

I stumbled upon your blog by accident and was astounded by your posts.

I'm from a third world country too, living in a small city. People here are also just about the same as the people in your place.

I mean, for everybody, they should only follow a certain trend for this season. No one dared to stand out or be risky. Because if you do, you'll be stared at and criticized.

But, there are actually certain people who are like you, unique, don't really care of what others think and totally fabulous! :)

Love to read more of your posts in the future!

Oh, and I love the dress you made. And, all your shoes. :D

Keep up the blog.

You should write to someone like Stacey Bendet (US designer) and let them know about your blog.

I think many New Yorkers in the heart of the Fashion world would love your blog as well. Actually, if you had your own site/URL name you could probably make money each month from it.

You should focus on creating your own label as well. Hence that why I mentioned Stacey Bendet, who was a web designer and now has sales of 45$million.

Stay true to yourself and stay Gold.

People will always be jealous then you because they are threatened by you as you are better looking and more intelligent then they are. Thats the reason people sent the photos I'm sure.

Stay true to yourself.

hola fabi,

Keep on keeping on!
